January 23rd New Comix!!

This is a big week, friends! Scroll through our recommendations for January 23rd's New Comic Book Day, listed below. We have a collection of new series, exciting graphic novels, and of course many of our returning favorites! Those are pretty standard things for a Wednesday, sure, but wait until you see what they are!

There are SEVEN first issues and specials coming on Wednesday! We are particularly excited about two new titles from Boom! Studios- Avant-Guards #1 and Buffy the Vampire Slayer #1! Avant-Guards, described as "Giant Days meets Check, Please!", follows a ragtag basketball team at an historically all-female arts college. Along with Check, Please!, Fence, and Dodge City, we're excited to add this to our collection of adorable sports stories (something we never thought we'd say). The other new title (and the one we are admittedly most excited for): Buffy! In a very abridged comic history of Buffy, after the television show ended, the remaining "seasons" of the story were created in comic book form through Dark Horse. After season 12, which saw a very grown up Buffy (this past Saturday was her 38th birthday after all), Dark Horse lost the license for Buffy, and it was up in the air whether the story would continue. Cut to Boom Studios!, home of adorable favorites like Steven Universe and Goldie Vance, snagging the rights and folks weren't quite sure what would come next. This brings us up to speed on the upcoming first issue on Wednesday, which finds Buffy Summers back in high school, but living in an modern, iPhone world. With Jordie Bellaire at the helm, the brilliant writer behind the dark witch story Redlands, any fears of a saccharin vampire slayer largely dissipated. We'll share that we had a chance to read the first issues of Avant-Guards and Buffy already, and they are both worth a pick up! We don't want to spoil anything, but we're excited for other folks to read them so we can talk about it! Oh, and those other five new titles? More badass stories including Naomi and Guardians of the Galaxy, which consists of a new team including Moondragon and Phyla-Vell (in what looks like her Captain Marvel costume)!

We also get some great graphic novels and returning stories this week! The graphic novels are especially strong in the kiddo department, with a new Hilda story (yes, that Hilda from the amazing Netflix show!), and the new book Fast Enough: Bessie Stringfield's First Ride! We're also psyched to pick up the next issues of Exorsisters (funnier than we expected!), Livewire (Vita Ayala is clearly incapable of not being a badass and therefore only writes badass characters), Monstress (a new story arc!), and Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur (guest-starring Doctor Strange!).

Each title, listed below in alphabetical order, includes cover art and a brief description. To learn more about each title, click on the cover art image and head over to Previews World!

Are there other titles you're picking up this week? What are we missing from our list? Become a member of Femme Power Comix and let us know in the comments section!
